BBQ Sauced Bacon Hot Dogs with Cheddar Cheese

I recently made my bacon wrapped hog dogs for dinner. While I was savoring every bite of those delectable dogs, ( I did make myself stop at two….don’t judge, it has bacon. I can’t help myself.) I had a thought in between my sighs of contentment of how could this get any better? BBQ sauce. That tiny word crept in. What would a hot dog, that was already swoon worthy, that was wrapped in bacon and cooked in the air fryer taste like coated in BBQ sauce and topped with cheddar cheese? It is heaven…heaven in between a nice, soft hot dog bun.

Close your eyes and imagine….or you can just look at the mouthwatering picture above….a juicy, plump hot dog that has been wrapped in smoky bacon. The hot dog is nestled in a soft hot dog bun and coated with your favorite tangy BBQ sauce, then topped with cheddar cheese ( I used white cheddar cheese). It’s all placed in the air fryer or the oven so the cheese gets all melty to add a finishing touch to one delicious hot dog.

Here’s What You Need To Make Your Own:

*1 pkg of hot dogs

*1 slice of bacon per hot dog

*BBQ sauce; homemade or your favorite premade; I used the kind that was already premade

*shredded cheddar cheese; I used white cheddar but the other kind is good as well.

*hot dog buns

If you are using an air fryer, which I recommend for cooking these, here are the directions for cooking Air Fryer Bacon Wrapped Hot Dogs.

If you prefer to cook them in an oven or toaster oven:

Line a baking sheet with foil and preheat the oven to 400°

Wrap each hot dog with one slice of bacon.

Place the hot dogs on the baking sheet with the ends of the bacon slices underneath the hot dog. If you are afraid that the bacon will unwrap, secure with toothpicks.

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the hot dogs are cooked through and the bacon is done to your liking.

Place the bacon wrapped hot dog inside one of the hot dog buns,

Spoon some of the BBQ sauce over the hot dog.

Top with the cheese.

Spray a baking sheet with no stick spray and place the hot dogs on the baking sheet.

Place in the oven or toaster oven at 400° for 5 to 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the hot dog buns start to toast.

If using an air fryer, preheat at 380° for 2 minutes. Place the hot dogs in the basket and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the hot dog buns begin to toast.

*Note*

Cooking time might vary depending on the brand and size of the air fryer.

Serve right away while warm and Enjoy!

Hot Dog Quesadillas

These hot dog quesadillas are not only a great way to use up any leftover hot dogs, but they are pretty darn tasty as well. Just cook your hot dogs the way you like them, grilled, pan fried, in the oven or in the air fryer. Hubby and I really prefer ours cooked in the air fryer. It really tastes the closest to grilling them in my opinion. If you haven’t tried them this way, check out my post on Air Fryer Hot Dogs. Any which way you decide to cook them, they will taste delicious smothered in cheese and wrapped in a warm tortilla.

Here’s what you need:

*Cooked hot dogs

*flour tortillas any size; I used the 8 inch size

*shredded cheese; I used a Monterrey Jack cheddar blend

*oil for the griddle or pan

Slice the hot dogs length wise then cut into pieces.

Place a flour tortilla on a flat surface and add a desired amount of shredded cheese to one side of the tortilla.

Add the sliced hot dogs over the cheese.

Then sprinkle on more cheese on top of the hot dogs. You can never have too much cheese in my opinion. Fold in half.

Heat a griddle or pan on medium heat. Brush the griddle or pan with a little oil. Place the quesadillas on the griddle.

Let them cook for about 3 minutes or until the cheese starts to melt and the underside turns golden.

Carefully flip them over and cook another 2 minutes.

If you are making several batches at a time, preheat the oven to 250° and place the quesadillas that are done in the oven to keep warm.

Transfer to a cutting board and cut in half.

Serve with sour cream, guacamole or salsa.

Enjoy!

Air Fryer Pizza Dogs

A while back ( almost a year ago to be exact) I made some rather tasty pizza hot dogs. I wanted to tweak it a bit and instead of cooking them in the oven, use the air fryer because, well, I really love this handy appliance. I’m still learning my way around it, yes still even after all these months. These pizza dogs were definitely a winner. If you like pepperoni pizza and hot dogs, then you will surely find this a keeper. The hot dogs have been cooked in the air fryer for that grilled taste, then smothered in pizza sauce with Italian seasonings, layered with pepperoni and cheese… all nestled in a lightly toasted hoagie roll. It was really hard to eat just one. Another plus is this can be done in less than 30 minutes.

Here’s what you need:

*hot dogs; I used the all beef kind

*hoagie rolls; I found that regular hot dog buns were too small but you can use what you prefer

*sliced pepperoni

*pizza sauce

*Italian seasoning

*shredded cheese; I used a pizza blend

Preheat the air fryer at 400°

Place the desired amount of hot dogs into the air fryer. Follow the link to air fryer hot dogs for the amount of cooking time. When the hot dogs are done, wipe out the basket and set aside the hot dogs, take care because the basket will be hot.

Open up a hoagie roll and spoon some of the pizza sauce on the inside of the roll.

Place some of the pepperoni in a layer down the middle.

Then lay a hot dog on top of the pepperoni.

Next, spoon more pizza sauce over the hot dog, then sprinkle on a small amount of the Italian seasoning.

Top with desired amount of cheese.

and finally, add another layer of pepperoni on top of the cheese.

Place the hot dogs into the air fryer basket.

Mine would fit 3 at a time. Depending on the size of the basket, you might have to make these in batches if you are making more than the basket can hold.

Cook at 400° for 2 minutes then check the hot dogs to see how fast they are toasting. Also, I did have a few pepperoni that blew off a little from the cheese, but it was easy to place them back on. Once the cheese starts melting I did not have any more issues.

Continue cooking for another 2 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the rolls are toasted as desired.

*Note*

Cooking time might vary depending on the brand and size of the air fryer.

Carefully take out the pizza dogs and serve.

Hot Dog Chili

When I was a kid, there were a lot of weekends we had either hamburgers or hot dogs for dinner. Looking back, it was probably because it’s a cheaper meal, easy to fix on a busy day and we loved them. I mean, who doesn’t love a good hot dog with chili. Down here in the South, most restaurants serve hot dogs topped with chili or as we call it, a chili dog. I thought that’s how everyone ate their hot dogs…..hey, I was a kid what can I say. My hubby, who is from up North, wasn’t quite sure what to make of a hot dog with chili not to mention that it doesn’t contain beans. He pretty much loves them now. My mom and dad always made their chili from scratch. My recipe is pretty much they way they made it….and my mom still does to this day, but of course I’ve tweaked it a bit. It’s great topped with ketchup, mustard and even a sliced pickle or two. This also makes a great chili cheese sandwich…..but that’s for a later post so stay tuned.

Here’s what you need:

*1 LB or ground beef; I use a leaner beef for this

*3/4 cups ketchup or more to taste

*2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce or more to taste

*2 tsp. mustard or more to taste

*1 TBS chili powder or to taste

*1 tsp. onion powder or more to taste

*1/4 tsp salt or more to taste

Heat a large pan to medium high heat and add ground beef, break up into very small pieces as it cooks; drain if needed.

Turn the heat down to medium and add the remaining ingredients.

Mix well to combine.

Reduce heat, cover and simmer for abut 10 to 15 minutes.

Serve over hot dogs and add your favorite toppings.

*Note*

This can be frozen for up to 3 months.

Oven Chili Cheese Hot Dogs

First off I have to start out by saying that I usually do not like canned chili. I grew up with my parents always making homemade hot dog chili and I have always done the same….. and hot dog chili is not chili with beans. I had a debate with my hubby over that when I first made him hot dogs. There is a difference between chili that you eat in a bowl and chili that goes over a hot dog. Maybe it’s a southern thing? Now where was I? Oh yes, canned chili. I’m still not a huge fan, but for this it really works well. I wanted something quick I could put together fast and throw in the oven, so I broke down and bought some. You can make the homemade kind, and at some point I am going to try this with the homemade, but…well….for this, what can I say, I’m lazy.

Here’s what you need:

*1 can of chili; I used Hormel without beans

*hot dogs; these do not have to be precooked.

*ketchup, to taste

*mustard, to taste

*shredded cheese; I used a cheddar Colby Jack blend

*sturdy hot dogs buns or hoagie rolls; I find that hoagie rolls work better because they are sturdier. These are the kind I use and not always this brand.

Preheat oven to 350°.

Lay the hot dog buns, cut side up in a baking pan.

*tip* If you have a baking pan or dish that is too large, take some foil, ball it up and place into the empty space. This will keep the hot dogs from tipping over while baking.

Spread desired amount of ketchup and mustard on the inside of each bun.

My, that is a very up close and personal shot there. I guess when I took this shot, I wanted you to see waaaay down in there.

Place a hot dog in each bun.

Spoon some of the chili over each hot dog.

Then add desired amount of cheese on top of the chili.

Cover with foil.

Before covering the baking pan, spray the inside of the foil with no stick spray.

This will help keep the cheese from sticking to the foil while baking.

Bake for 40 minutes. Serve and enjoy!

Pizza Hot Dogs

If you’re tired of hot dogs done the same way, this puts a tasty twist on your average dog. If you like pepperoni pizza, then this one is for you. There is pepperoni, beef hot dogs, pizza sauce and cheese all mixing and mingling together in one single hot dog bun. This also is cooked in the oven, so basically you put it all together, throw it in the oven for 30 minutes and you have dinner… or lunch if you prefer…or if you’re like my hubby…breakfast.

Here’s what you need:

*Hot dogs buns

*pepperoni

*hot dogs

*pizza sauce; homemade or from a jar

*shredded cheese ( I used a Colby Jack and Cheddar mix)

Preheat oven to 350°

Place the hot dog buns in a baking pan and open, but not too far or the buns will split. Add a layer of pepperoni on the bottom.

Place hot dog on top of the pepperoni.

Next, spoon pizza sauce over the hot dogs.

load on the cheese…..

Cover with foil.

* Here’s a tip: Spray foil with non stick spray so the cheese will not stick to the foil while cooking.

Bake for 30 minutes.

Serve and enjoy!
